What is FEP Hook Up Wire?

FEP hook up wire is a type of hook up wire that uses fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) as its insulation material. FEP is a high-performance fluoroplastic with excellent electrical insulation, chemical resistance and high temperature resistance.

These wires are commonly used in internal wiring for appliances, electronic devices, medical equipment, and other applications requiring high-temperature and chemical-resistant materials.

Construction of FEP Hook Up Wire

The construction of FEP hook up wire usually includes the following parts:

Conductor

The conductor of FEP hook up wire is usually made of tinned copper or nickel-plated copper, and sometimes silver-plated copper conductor is also used. The conductor can be single-strand or multi-strand twisted, depending on the cable specifications and application requirements.

Insulation

The conductor is covered with a layer of fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) insulation material.

Properties:

High-temperature resistance (up to 200°C or higher in some cases).

Excellent chemical resistance to oils, fuels, acids, and solvents.

Flame-retardant and self-extinguishing (meets standards like UL VW-1 or IEC 60332-1-2).

Low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss for superior electrical insulation.

Shielding

Some types of FEP hook up wire may be equipped with a shielding layer to improve the ability to resist electromagnetic interference. The shielding layer is usually made of silver-plated copper braiding, providing more than 90% shielding coverage.

Jacket

The outer jacket is usually made of FEP or other fluoropolymers to provide additional protection and mechanical strength. The color and type of the jacket may vary depending on the specific application needs.

Advantages of FEP Hook Up Wire

Compared to other insulation materials, FEP hook-up wires offer the following advantages:

1. FEP hook up wire has a heat resistance far superior to conventional plastic materials. FEP hook up wire can remain flexible and not easy to break at temperatures up to 200°C.

2. FEP hook up wire has a low relative dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. This allows FEP hook up wire to provide low attenuation and signal stability in high-frequency applications, such as the insulation material of coaxial cables.

The dielectric constant (also called relative permittivity) measures how easily a material becomes polarized in an electric field. Low relative dielectric constant means that the FEP material has a low degree of polarization in an electric field (approximately 2.1 for FEP), so its permittivity is low. Low dielectric constant helps reduce delays and energy losses during signal transmission, and improve electrical performance and signal transmission speed. A low dielectric constant allows for thinner insulation layers without sacrificing electrical performance, saving space and weight in compact designs.

Dielectric loss refers to the energy dissipated as heat when an insulating material is exposed to an alternating electric field. The lower the dielectric loss (tanδ) (the dissipation factor of FEP is about 0.0007), the less energy the material loses when transmitting signals in an electric field. Low dielectric loss is particularly important for high-frequency circuits because it reduces signal attenuation, improves signal integrity and transmission efficiency. Low dielectric loss also reduces heat generation, which helps maintain the integrity of the insulation layer at high voltages (600V) or high frequencies.

3. FEP hook up wire is chemically and environmentally resistant. It can resist chemicals such as acids, alkalis, and oils, ensuring long-term stable operation of the wire in corrosive environments. FEP hook up wire is extremely resistant to heat, sunlight, and weather, has low moisture absorption, and excellent weather resistance, and can be used in outdoor environments for a long time without degradation.

4. FEP material has good mechanical strength and wear resistance, which can effectively protect the internal structure of the wire and extend its service life. The flexible characteristics make FEP hook up wire easy to bend and install, suitable for complex wiring environments, and improve installation flexibility and convenience.

5. FEP hook up wire has excellent flame retardant properties (oxygen index greater than 95%, almost non-flammable), which can effectively reduce the risk of fire caused by short circuits and other reasons. FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer) material meets multiple international standards in terms of self-extinguishing and flame retardancy, such as UL94 V-0 vertical burning test requirements, NFPA's UL910 Steiner wind tunnel test (NFPA-262), EN IEC 60332-1-1:2004+A1:2015 standard, UL's CMP grade standard, etc.
